“…The massive 1964 Good Friday earthquake that rattled Alaska long ago caused tidal waves felt across the world. In Portage Valley the incoming waves of salt water devoured entire forests leaving them as “standing dead”. Over those many years’ high winds, rain and snow have blasted the trees relentlessly, stripping them of branches and smoothing their trunks. Here wolf tracks lead off through the “branchless” sentinels, vanishing in the distant spruce forest on the mountainside. The last snowfall packed against the windward sides of the trunks. In the eerie moon light it seems they are leaning in for a view of the undulating aurora …”
